             Introduction to Salman Rushdie and his style

Ø Salman Rushdie, who is the most influential and controversial writer of the twenty-first century. He was born on 19june, 1947 in Bombay .He called as Ahmad Salman Rushdie. In Indian we may found some controversial facts including some work of art, which has written during nineties. Of course he has made some facts, which are inappreciable in other writer’s works. When we deeply go in analysis in the works of Rushdie, there will be open challenge or acceptance of issues.
Ø I came across to his writings from two or three years, but before that I heard about him with the sources of television and newspapers. I don’ think so, that there may happen issues over his writings. Actually now days writers are enhancing new methods of writing same like this I want to give an example of Aseem Trivedi, who is the well known cartoonist in India and during some elections his pictures takes place of chaos in society.
Ø  Salman Rushdie has used two major concept into this work:

1.  The Imaginary Homeland

Ø 1).Nostalgia
Ø 2).Memory
Ø This chapter begins with a memory. We generally capture photographs as a part of memory that is something to remember after days, and years. There is description that it was started from 1946.Thereby Rushdie says that his present that is foreign. Simply ‘nostalgia’ means ‘Longing for Something Past’.
“…This continuity was reality”
When we read the above line, it directly reflects the idea of ‘Tradition and Individual Talent’s Essay’.
Ø Somehow, in “Imaginary Homeland” we can say that Salman Rushdie tries to overcome from his past memories. As if it was broken glass. We could not connect it fragments as a part of an event or as a part of lively image.
“The broken glass is not merely a mirror of nostalgia.”
Ø I can give an example of Jumpha Laheri’s book “The Namesake” where he goes back to the village of naxalism .In 1970’s Maoism has begun from naxalism. Same like this Rushdie goes back to his past in Jammu and Kashmir. In “Midnight Children “Rushdie shown an ugly side of the war of 1947.

2.  Commonwealth literature does Not Exist

v Explanation of commonwealth
Ø Commonwealth means to the nations, which were ruling by the ‘Britishers’. The head of the commonwealth literature was Queen Elizabeth of England. The idea of the commonwealth literature came into existence during Elizabethan era. Commonwealth contains writers from around the world that is global in a way.
Ø As the time passes away it introduced to post-colonial literature. Now days it is known as the New-literature. The main problem of commonwealth is lies in liberty which occupies position and this position is as a periphery not as a centre.
Ø Being commonwealth writers Salman Rushdie has suffered as a writer of this and before independence time in India it was part of an issue but after getting freedom it became banned issue or it has lost its well-known aspects.
Ø This issue may lead from 1950’s to 1970’s after this phase the concept was removed or was overed. There are two main sub points which I have marked during Balaji Rangnathan Sir’s sessions and he has talked about these two points as well.
1).Language politics.
2).Commonwealth Colonies.
Ø Thus, language should be local and it should presented with the help of work of art and national and global has similar importance all over.
v According to Gujarat…..
Ø Local language: Gujarati
Ø National language: Hindi
Ø Global/International language: English

3.  The New Empire within Britain

Ø What to do we mean by ‘racism’?
Ø It is a biological thing or is it related to body as a logical fact?
Ø Simply racism means an attitude. There were three major races and out of which new terminology came into existence it was “Racism”, like Cococian, Mongoloid, white Asian, Africa, Negro, etc… We can quote one event which was so terrific to evaluate but we could not target it.
Ø Responsibilities are existing but those who are noble why they are suffering and bearing?
Ø This event has logical fact about particular race. Not only in India but all over the world we are facing the same situation. And caste or religion becomes victimized. Although they are not in any fault.
Ø In comparison to American: Nairobi, Finland, Africa etc…differs to each other money will move in different way in American and in England.
v Britishers and Nostalgia.
Ø In history or in past event what happened, is totally based on whom they think or whom they are pertaining well-well when we talk about any place’s presence and its literature, then we must say that its roots are seeded in their roots. Simply, it means that their past is affecting a lot on their present position and style of writing.
Ø Example: Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai, there we can see that if Chinese people attacks Indians then we can loss our land because they have majority of population and we can defeated by them. But if we are losing our and then we have to accept their rules and have to be their servants.
Ø Rudyard Kipling talks about racism and he also says that each and every nation has its deepness and history and they are behaving as previously people have done towards other superior and inferiority. He talks about ‘Fuzzy-Wuzzy’ and the ways that leaves their stain and this stain has seeped into every part of the culture, the language and the daily life, until now it is not washed out.
Ø  Thatcher who captures past glory of England and says that Britain was no longer the nation that had built an Empire and ruled a quarter of the world. Thus we can say that Britishers are slow to learn the real lessons of their past.
Ø In the beginning of this essay Rushdie also says that Britain is not “Nazi-Germany”. But it was an attempt to purify German thought and the German language of the pollution of Nazism. It happened after the fall of Hitler.
Ø During the years of 2000 Indians were not getting password for Australia or America. But now because of the effects of liberalization, privatization and globalization we are getting citizenship easily. This was only an example but there were many countries which are facing the problems of Nostalgia towards Britishers.

          Intercultural Communication

*                   What do we mean by “Intercultural Communication”?
                            It undertakes some sorts of humans like ethic, occupational, class, etc. In other words I can explain it with the help of Indians. When in Gujarat people simply usually used to speak in Gujarati language but in Kerala this language and its background may differ. Though both are cited in India but they sounds different because their culture and are totally different. Same like this their living style also different to each other. I am giving this example with noble intention, if there are queries or mistakes in explanation then correctness is required.
                        In the given article or in research book from Cambridge University there is mentioned point that in United States it has traditionally been related to the behavioral sciences, psychology and professional business turning in training. Whereas in Europe it is mostly associated with anthropolology and the language sciences or linguistics. By this point I want to say that there will be difference or differences between each and every person or linguists who belongs to the different background and culture. It is common that language will flow constantly and it changes by dialects and by its structures.

*                      Background to the intercultural
                                “If we talk about ‘culture’ then it is meant to ‘knowledge about great works of literature, social institutions and historical events and acquired through the translation of written texts”.
                If we take an example of translation of written texts then we may observe translation of “Bhagwadgeeta” a Sanskrit holly book of Hindu religion which was translated by thereby we got new version of this great holly book and it became a historical part of Indian culture. However it is translated in many languages and it contains same respect everywhere in India who believes in religion and reads holly books.
                 It is mentioned in the research book that the term “Intercultural Communication” became prominent in TESOL only in the 1980’s was firstly developed in Europe.
                 Edward T. Hall and linguist Robert Lado who were officer in Europe’s Georgetown University. In “The Silent Language” (1959). Hall showed the complex ways in which “culture is communication and communication ids culture”. Without making communication we could not think that culture may alive. Obviously culture is not static, it changes generation after generation. The principals of Intercultural Communication were developed by Hall and his colleagues in Foreign by the Peace Corps in early 1960’s.
*                    Miscommunications
                   Miscommunication occurs when there are two different cultural ways or parts. Example; Asian and American. More precisely Indian person could not communicate to American person, because their language, region, background differs.
                      American English is changing from Victorian age to the Modern age and Indians have learnt English language as a subject and as education system occurs the biggest problem. Thus American English and Indian English or Indlish always differs to each other and because of these reasons there may happen miscommunications. And we feel opposition or mismatches to this culture. We closely describe it as Western culture and India as an Eastern culture.
                     I should not represent other tactics because western and eastern culture we know very well. We can judge miscommunications with the help of communal sales man and corporate executives. Ethnically diverse groups within one and the same country and was used by social workers and educators. Through trade, import-export Europe became one of the most popular outcomes of Intercultural communication into the industrialized countries.
                 Majority of human interactions are important for communications. There may happen mismatch, despair, similarity, attraction towards cultural outcomes, behavioral patterns, etc. These things may arise when we commute interculturality of two or three different culture. Here discourse and language plays vital role. In discourse we can estimate attitudes, values and beliefs.
                If we just take an example of a group of discussion and we contribute some scholars from different cultures or backgrounds then there will be close interaction, we can see that their living style and their structure occurs different grammatology and linguistics. Thus, its base of communication skills, that how to accept another culture in its way as they are.
                  Post war events lead us to communication. Because when so many noble children and people died, in America there was chaotic situation and other nations came to help them and in this way communication especially intercultural communication took place. In America, Iran, Iraq, China, Japan; war, anti-war, super-natural, natural elements has organized this kind of communication.
                  Intercultural training and research place in US centers such as the East- West center in Honolulu in early 1960’s.

*                    Cross Cultural Business Communication
                        Cross Cultural Business Communication is very helpful in building cultural intelligence through coaching and training in cross cultural communication, cultural negotiation, multi cultural conflict resolution, customer service, etc. Cross cultural communication is not only for the sake of expat capitals but also its delivery of content.  An ability of owner of the international company who is going to deal with more grabbing opportunity to interact international company.
                       Most important in cross cultural business is that how to develop ideology of fairly interaction, negotiation and understanding of other culture. If this happens then there will not to be failure attempt in the field of marketing and deals. It will count as a plus-point for those who are developing these ideas beneath themselves.

*  In Intercultural Communications these things are important and meaningful:

1.   Attribution: Others as a stupid, deceit or as a crazy.
2.   Informal understandings: Developed trust.
3.   Non Verbal Communication: Variations in body language without words.
4.   Kinesics Behavior: That means posture, gestures, facial expression, eye contact, etc.
5.   Proxemics: In terms office layouts.

*                      Management of Intercultural Communications
* Develop cultural sensitivity.
* Anticipate the meaning the receiver will get.
* Careful encoding.
* Use words, pictures and gadgets.
* Avoid slang, idioms and regional savings.
* Selective transmission and follow up actions.
* Build relationships, face to face communication if possible.
* Careful decoding of feedback.
* Get feed back from multiple parties.
* Improve listening and observational skills.

                   Conclusion

                       I can say that after the globalization, liberalization, civilization and industrialization the way of thinking and communication skill has been diverted into one way communication skills with the help of the technology which can only access the global language means the English Language. So communication happens in broader way.

                         Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
                         Edgar A. Poe was most dominant figure of the Romantic Literature. He is mostly known for his regular genre or fiction like mysterious stories or detective stories. He was born in Boston and was an orphaned child. Thereby he was living with John and Frances. In the very beginning of his childhood he has lost his parents and has got influence of it in his life as a orphan boy.
                Edgar Allan Poe most probably known for his contribution in Cosmology and Cryptography. Cryptography is a kind of writing or style where writer is using some numbers and symbols. But it stands for some kind of messages which is bounded to give openly or directly. Poe was most famous in American society because his writings were spread all over in America and Boston. Thus in Poe’s stories we can find out such a kind of thinking process which can be connected to the idea of discrimination of a particular group of people who are not acceptable in the society in which we are living, it called as a well respected society.
              E. A. Poe has written five major short stories and each and every story contains the different meaning. All of these stories are dependable on Psychological facts and logical; thinking process.

1.   The fall of the House of Usher.
2.   The Purloined Letter.
3.   The Gold Bug.
4.   The Tell Tale Heart.
5.   The Cask of Amontillado.
            In these stories we could not find out female characters into the power position. So the question of gender here comes, when man is writing a story and female is writing a story.

                     The fall of the House of Usher
                In this story there are four main characters who leads the whole story, they are as under:
Roderick Usher
Madeline Usher
Philip Winthrop (the unnamed narrator but he has given name in movie)
Bristol (a servant of the Usher family)
                     This story is characterized in a big palace kind of house, very horrible and terrific in a lonely place where nobody is going to come. But in this story the unnamed received a letter from his friend named as Roderick Usher and then narrators goes to visit his friend. In this story pronoun first person narrative “I” refers to the unnamed narrator. In this story the female character Madeline Usher is misrepresented. At the end of the story we can see that Madeline has been killed by her own brother because of curse of the family. Thereby Madeline comes to take revenge of her death as a spirit. So in this story the narrator may describe as a mouth piece to a character which is not focused in the book. Then narrator goes back to his from where he was coming to meet his friend. After being there narrator could not help Madeline Usher although he wants help her.

                                  The Purloined Letter
               “The Purloined Letter” is one of the finest short story or a detective story by Edgar Allan Poe. In this story also we have the same thing the unnamed narrator, with the help of this unnamed narrator we can say that Poe tries to fix a kind of character who is unidentified.
                 Here Poe also describes some characters that are representing their skills or their advanced thinking as the thief and the detective officers are doing in the case solving situation. In this story Dupin is characterized as a brilliant detective, who is more personal about himself. He speaks less but is an expert in psychological thinking. Minister G is more scientific thinker eho always looks for authenticity of proofs, evidences.
                  Poe creates the world of hierarchy of his time. Here the element of taking revenge is reflected with the help of Dupin’s character. The story ends with the conclusion that what is visible to us is not true but what is hidden from us or what is not shown to us is very important. Things never comes directly to us one should ready for it always.

                                    The Gold Bug
                In the very beginning of the story Poe describes a relationship or a bond between the characters they are the unnamed narrator and Mr. William Legrand. The title has its own significance.
             In this story Poe introduces the method of the solving the case. It looks like merely an assumption that to find out gold or a treasure with the help of a bug. Thus the whole story is dependable on direction in which our life is moving, aim, wish and desire to achieve something auspicious in our life. Here Mr. William Legrand’s personality is so different which is not similar to the unnamed narrator.
               At the end of the story we found on more conclusion point hat is William Legrand’s wife has been died from the beginning and they are living in an island.

                               The Tell Tale Heart
                   This story begins with the speech of the unnamed narrator and he speaks that is he mad? So the general interpretation is that any mad person will not accept that he or she is mad person. But we came to know that in this story the unnamed narrator kills an old man who was his owner and the narrator was working in his house as a servant. Once the unnamed narrator kills the old man because the narrator was feeling some kind of fear because of the vulture eye of the old man. It was torturing him day and night.
                  So the story leads a kind of fear in unnamed narrator’s mind and because of this he kills him and he accepts his sin in front of the police officers.

                         The Cask of Amontillado
                        In this story there are two main characters they are Furtunato and the unnamed narrator. Both are close friends and know each others need and desire. But because of personal anxieties and depression of being failure in getting the same reputation as Fortunato has. In the carnival festival; there was lots of celebration and nobody knows what is going to be done and the narrator tries to take revenge with he help of his killing plan of Fortunato.
            The unnamed narrator calls Fortunato in a cave (a secret place) and he gives Fortunato drinks instead of his medicine and makes him unconscious. Thereby the unnamed narrator kills Fortunato ands lives him alone although he calls the narrator to help him.
            So here in this story the name and fame, reputation became a kind of jealousy to the unnamed narrator.

                                Conclusion
                  In the conclusion I want to say that there is lack of self respect, confidence and stability of the mind makes the person superior as well as inferior in his or life.

                                         Harold Pinter (1930 – 2008)
               Harold Pinter was born on 10th December, 1930 and he refers to the Jewish family. Although Pinter has not strong relation with his father because his father was much conscious about discipline and to some extent he believed in being perfectionist. Pinter’s was tailor. So later Pinter said that “The condition of being bombed has never left me”. We can see that Pinter mentally depressed because he was feeling some kind of cravenness and isolation in his life. However Pinter was well with his mother because she was not forcing him to do particular things or to live in a condition in which his father wants to live him. So Pinter was much different in his thought process.
                  He has got Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005. One of the most famous British dramatist and he has made silver jubilee in his writing career and known as a playwright, director and actor. Thus it’s easy to guess that how much he was involved in all these fields with a strong voice. He himself directed and has become actor in his productions.
                   As we knows about Charley Chaplin; has directed his short films and has played main role into his directed film. Pinter was multiple working people and was better in representation of “Comedy of Menace”.  Pinter’s some manuscripts are in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre. Pinter has begun his career as a playwright with a production of “The Room” (1975). Thereby he has published his second play “The Birthday Party” (1975). Let us introduce his work which was written during nineteenth century:
Ñ    The Birthday Party (1975).
Ñ    The Homecoming (1964).
Ñ    Betrayal (1978).
Ñ    The Servant (1963).
Ñ    The Go-Between (1971).
Ñ    The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981).
Ñ    The Trial (1993).
Ñ    Sleuth (2007).
                                  Harold Pinter has been died from liver cancer on 24th December, 2008. He also joined the political theatre and has indirectly satirized on the so called political system, destruction and corruption in the system with the help of his writings and representation of dramas.

                               Comedy of Menace
Comedy of menace has been started by David Campton. In English literature we can find out literatures like Neo-classical age, Victorian age, Romantic age, etc. But Harold Pinter criticizes some important political, economical system of England. Now days it became more critical because there is all around the world we can find out corruption anywhere, and it is leading by noble people unknowingly. However they are also an important part of the nation. Super nations have the concept of civilization, privatization and liberalization in the nineteenth century.
                          Comedy = Humor.
                          Menace = Threatening fear in mind.
               A work of art of a play in which people feels fear or the situation may become so much threatening that people or audience who watches the play may don’t know that what is happening and why it falls under the category of terrific matter. ‘Comedy of Menace’ is much different from sentimental comedy and anti-sentimental comedy. Comedy of menace is the phrase which was the part of the book “The Lunatic View: A Comedy of Menace”, which was written by David Campton. Irving Ward- a critic who quotes that In Harold Pinter’s play “The Birthday Party” has the effect of menace.
                       From the very beginning till the end of the drama, there is lots of conversation between the characters like Mag, Nat Goldberg, Dermont McCann and Petey where Stanley stands for some countries which are silent or their voices are much damned, so that they could not argue against powerful nations like US, Germany, etc.
    In ‘Comedy of Menace’ there was another more distinguished interpretation is when counter-argue between two characters takes place, there it creates a kind of mental depression and we can’t say that we can make our self enjoying in that situation. If we talk about conversation then we must look at the facial expression as well as a thought process.
                  In one of the blog I have read with the above title that from Saint’s day more than surprising thing with them with its repetition. Definition:
                It suggests that although they are funny, they are also frightening or menacing in a vague and undefined way. Even as they laugh, the audience is unsettled, ill at ease and uncomfortable.
               More deeply if we concentrate over this idea then it deals with an individual’s personal anxiety and with their understandings. In anti-sentimental comedy. This play is almost tragic because at the end of the play we are not getting any clue that why it was happening but indirectly we are getting many things like master-slave relationship, in which slave could not speak and can’t express his or her idea, second thing is that whose voice is too some extent is banned.
               In the local press, despite the understandable low, or hermeneutic earthquake, that not only baffled the clueless philistine of the drama, but left in some of their audience complaining. The writer also says that meanwhile, strangers without conscience seemed to be the name of the game in another British play, “ The Birthday Party “, which opened at the encore only two weeks later- the first production in America of anything by Harold Pinter.
               In London “Comedy of Menace” merely titled with or excoriated like ‘Saint’s Day’ for mystification and sadism, the review so divesting those performances were immediately canceled by the producers. There was a program has a brief not about the author and a brief not on a play by Wickham (Glynne Wickham), which refers to Pinter’s menacing effect and being an artist in a society that “Has little time for art or artist”.
             The above reference refers to the controversy and damage which made to Harold Pinter. Society does not have respect for an artist have to be a personal not personified.
                   A  Blog by an author Inesco, Genet and Pinter
                          (In a form of a book, pg. No. 241)
                 Pinter’s first long play “The Birthday Party” is a comedy of menace which tends to sacrifice credibility to the horrors of the subconscious. At the end of the play Goldberg and McCann reduced the voice of Sacrifice and made him totally dumb. So here we don’t know what happened and it creates menacing effects.
                        Gangster Films- Wardle argues that “The Birthday Party” exemplifies the title of the comic menace which gave rise to this article: In Comedy of Menace as Merritt observes on the basis of his experience of this play and other accounts of the other two plays. Wardle proposes that comedy enables the committed agents and victims of destruction on to come on and off duty; to joke about the situation while oiling a revolver. So how Pinter uses game of ‘Blind man’s Bluff’ and Merritt suggest that ‘Comedy of Menace’ in Pinter’s plays ‘stands for something more substantial: destiny’, and that destiny handled in this way not as an austere exercise in classism but as an incurable disease which one forgets about most of the time behavior in which orthodox man is a willing collaborator in his own destruction. Whose lethal reminders may take the form of a joke is an apt dramatic motif for an age of conditional behavior. Thereby Merritt gives an example of a play “Uncle Vanya”.

                                                Conclusion
In this play many events like a game, door’s knocking in the darkness, Lulu and Mag’s giggling which sounds like a witch’s laugh. So here we can say that all of these things stand for the menacing effect in this play. Thus it is new genre of writing this play and the writer is consciously takes part in the same ‘Comedy of Menace’.
